Taken while on assignment, before beginning this course. These chairs occupy a raised dais in a hospice’s lounge.

Do you need to know that this is the lounge in a hospice in order to understand it? Does this change the image or change your understanding of it? I could be lying.

Nik pointed me towards Lisa Barnard’s 32 Smith Square, and it made me think of this image. It is as soaked in story and circumstance as any that I’ve taken.

If one is documenting a space that has a particular history, does that history automatically permeate the images made of it? Do I need to know the history of 32 Smith Square, the long time central office of the Conservative Party, in order to feel Lisa Barnard’s images?

How does my understanding of and feeling toward the Conservative Party shape my feeling toward these images? What if I liked the Conservative party?
