Anniversary
Too often it’s too easy to ignore the passage of time and the importance of achievements. Our focus is on our current project, this blog post, that post-production, do we need a new lens or just want one?
Work, particularly when you are working for yourself, building something, or building upon something, is a big chunk or our life. Decisions we make about work have ramifications for the our opportunities we have, and those of our families.
Everything in life has an opportunity cost, working more might mean less time with family, working for someone else will likely offer security and predictability, possibly in lieu of financial gain and personal fulfilment.
I’m thinking about this because October will mark the tenth anniversary of my ‘escape’ from the 9-5, when I went pro and became first and foremost, a self-employed photographer. I’m also thinking about it because a few weeks ago I photographed Ormerod Rutter’s fortieth birthday party.
Peter and Garry (Messrs Ormerod & Rutter) took their team to out to Ragley Hall for a great night out, with food, drink, and an awesome band. I was there on behalf of F8Creates, to get some documentary shots of the night.

The party was ace, and it felt like something people should do more. The agency has grown from just the two of them to a team of over 230 people. That kind of growth takes time and work, sacrifice and luck, and is something that deserves to be celebrated.
After dinner it was time to head downstairs to the bar and to listen to Kate Loveridge and her friends being epic before everyone headed outside for the big finale.
The evening culminated in a drone show to music by droneswarm.co.uk and a firework display from mlepyrotechnics.co.uk. The event as a whole was amazing and the team at Ormerod Rutter did a sterlling job putting it together, and were both welcoming and fun. All in all is was a great event.
Over my first 10 years in business, I’ve worked and been lucky and there have been times when I’ve had to sacrifice.
The tenth anniversary of jamesgreenoff.com will be a smaller affair, there probably won’t be fireworks, and if there is a drone flying it’ll be mine. Most likely I’ll take the interns out for sushi but whatever happens the anniversary will be marked, noted, and celebrated.
