About Me

My personal practice is as mixed as my love of photography. I enjoy landscape, wildlife, motorsport, and street photography, my first love is reportage or storytelling, that of documenting life around me.

One of the reasons I find photography so enthralling is that it has everything. I enjoy the technical detail and the artistic expression, it drives me to go to places and to do things that I would never do otherwise and helps me to connect to the world around me. After moving away from film during the burgeoning digital revolution, I’ve since returned to it for much of my personal work. Experimenting with film and my love of the analog process has inspired me me to improve my overall practice

I work closely with F8Creates, an independent creative agency, and with London Camera Exchange, both in Worcester. I’m a photographer for shootrewind.com, a company offering analog process photography to artisanal producers, and I’m involved with a number of local photography groups.

Photography has taken me to Le Mans and to the bear filled woods of eastern Finland. I’ve gone behind the scenes in restaurants, bakeries and factories alike, as well as wedding parties and corporate events. It has been my drive, my focus, and my passport.

In many ways all of my photographs are part of my personal practice, all part of a greater story, of my photography, and of my life.

Photography Courses

I love to talk about photography and find that sharing my enthusiasm rewarding. Helping people bridge the gap between what they want from their camera and and what they get from it is both fun and inspiring. If you’re looking to “Get off Auto”, or to take more control over your camera, or if you have a specific technique that you would like to work on, I can help.

The most structured course I offer is ‘Getting off Auto’. This begins with a conversation followed by a photowalk or hands-on session. Core subject areas are the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. We’ll also look at compositional techniques and ideas.

These sessions are offered on a 1-2-1 basis, making it easy to tailor the syllabus to your interests or needs. My “what’s next” course has no syllabus as it is entirely based on that which you would like to cover. Each session costs £145 and lasts for around 3 hours.

I also offer the “Getting off Auto” courses to groups on Saturdays in Worcester, there are four places on each course, each at £95. Drop me a line for more information.

“I’d be more than happy to recommend James to anyone for photography tuition…… attentive, patient and knowledgable and an excellent photographer with many interesting suggestions for the better shot!!!”
